I have a story to tell...only that it's not just a story...but happened to me.
Most of you who are familiar with SURE-P would have heard of GIS- Graduate Internship Fair. I was at an internship fair which held in calabar and I met many graduates there (Hey! I was once a clasroom teacher before I became an immigration officer). While waiting to be addressed, we talked amongst ourselves.
As usual, one or two people will stand out in the crowd, either due to their talkativeness or "tushnes". Well, that person happened to be a guy...hereafter referred to as Mr X.
We were on a queue and I know how to mind my business in a very strange place, but my interest was piqued when Mr X started talking about YOUWIN. I know I had written a business plan that scaled through the first stages of the YOUWIN competition, so I was very impressed he knew about this scheme. I now carried my two left legs and shifted closer to him to hear the full gist (phew!)
Mr X talked and talked and talked!! His achievements, his contracts, his ex girlfriend, his future prospects...he talked about every single topic!! every single thing!!! My ears grew wings, flew away, came back and located me, and Mr X was still talking!! We were amazed..but I was confused as hell. This "fair" was like a job opportunity for unemployed graduates, I kept asking myself "so if your resumé is that impressive, what are you doing here???
At the end of the day, we got deployed to different firms, schools..etc. Not everyone was successful. I was deployed to teach in a school, Mr X was deployed too, to a firm. We exchanged contacts and said our farewells. I had made some new friends...Mr X inclusive.
By the next week..Mr X had called regularly..sometimes asking to take me out (just for drinks he said)...I would cook up excuse day by day..because obviously, the "I am seeing someone" phrase (which is true) didn't work with him.
Few weeks later...Mr X drove to my vicinity, said he was back from church, wanted to see me, complained about non-payment of our salary. That was a general problem, we had not been paid for almost 5months by the Federal Government. I told him our salaries would be paid soonest. He said bye and left.
As fate wud have it, another friend from the fair, whom I had forgotten about, called the next day, still complaining about the salary issue, and that his firm wasn't helping matters. My interest was piqued!! That was the firm Mr X worked with too!!! So I enquired about Mr X, and this new friend said "oh!!! U mean the married guy??" I was shocked to my marrow!! Mr X was married??!!!!!!! More shocking was d fact he got married just a month before the fair!! So in all his rantings...he forgot to mention his "new bride", but talked abt his EX!!!
Hang on, the story just got interesting.
So, I told this other friend I would come to his firm on my way from work...to see things for myself...(I am a distant cousin to doubting thomas...so pardon me if "seeing is believing" is my motto. I closed early from work because we vacated for the term...and then off I went to see Mr X..(Ghen Ghen!!!) ..and my other friend ofcourse (straight face).
Approaching the office, I saw Mr X standing outside discussing with his colleague but he didnt see me. I stopped to watch him for a while, and as he gesticulated while talking to his friend, I saw a ring on his finger!!! (which was not there on the day of the fair).
I smiled and walked into the complex, called his name from behind (Note: he had not seen me yet). He turned and his smile quickly changed to tension...he asked uneasily "what are you doing here??" (this is coming from someone who had been begging me to come and "see" him)...me wey no dey carry last...I replied, "I came to see my friend".
Now something unbelievable happened, something Nollywood has failed woefully to portray in their movies.....MAGIC!!! In the brief moment I turned my face away...(intentionally), both of his hands disappeared into his pocket (hiding his ring), he didnt even bring it out to shake me!! mehn!!!!!
I went into the firm..funny enough, they were having a seminar which the CBN governor was on his way to attend. I entered, chatted briefly with my other friend and sat down for the seminar (killing two birds with one stone *winks*).
I got to see CBN governor...and he talked to us..yaaaaay!!
Oh...Mr X came into the seminar hall..acting all important...and when he raised his hand to direct a participant...THE RING WAS GONE!!!!! Magic!!
I was astonished!! Can a man be this deceptive??? To what end??
By the way, Mr X hasn't called me since that day...he practically vanished from the venue, and from the info I gathered at the office, he is a compulsive liar!! I am glad I was able to make him that uncomfortable.
So my question for the day, WHY DID MR X LIE???
