NIGERIAN NURSES ARE HOSTILE: TRUE OR FALSE??

Okay, maybe the heading is a bit wrong or controversial, lemme rephrase. "Most" Nigerian nurses are hostile: True or false??

I have no authority to speak about nurses outside the country because I have had no experience with them, and I really don't enjoy "hearsay".

But I will share 2 out of many personal experiences I have had with Nigerian nurses, which left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Experience 1:
My mom begged me to keep her friend company in the hospital (government hospital) some years back. This woman was in labour, with no relative around to assist. So here am i, in a ward filled with sooo many beds, with women at different stages of labour. Some screaming, others hitting the bed, squeezing their faces...I was scared!!! (women I hail ooo. God bless una)

I kept scanning the ward, looking at the nurses all huddled up in one corner, gisting away with no concern, the only time they walk over to your bed was to accompany the doctor check the dilation. No form of encouragement to these women in labour whatsoever. Infact if the shouting gets too much, you could see and feel the disdain in their eyes as the all turned to locate the owner of the voice.

I was jolted back to reality with the yelling of the lady I was told to watch. "What are you doing here?? Shey I told you I want to ease myself and you refused to help me?? (mind you, I was warned not to give her a bucket before the baby pops into it), she kept screaming at me...and I was just numb.

The nurse walked over, and said, "all this one you are screaming, you haven't gone anywhere o, you people are not the first and wont be the last". She hissed and walked away, deliberately moving her waist from left to right, so we could see and feel the vibration abi rotation of her ample ukwu!!

I was terrified. Few minutes later, she was asked to head to the labour room. For clarity, this first room is called the "crying room". I named it that, because that was all the women were doing, before you are moved to the "screaming and pushing room".

Hmmmn!! I sat by her bed in the new room, praying and hoping for a safe delivery. There was no light, they were using torchlight to deliver babies. All I heard was, "madam push na!! Stop wasting our time here, plenty hissing and cursing followed, you mean you didnt buy pad?? Please I cant use another person's own for you". Lord!!! All these to someone at the height if excruciating pain??

I made up my mind there and then, not to fall into the hands of Nigerian nurses. I knew I had heard so much about them, but this was firsthand experience.
I concluded private hospitals would have better nurses...I was proved wrong years later.
(the lady had a baby boy by the way, Thank God!!)

EXPERIENCE 2:
My younger sister just had a deep cut from a knife and needed stitches, she was bleeding profusely and the whole of her left hand was going numb. She kept saying she was feeling thirsty. I was scared but had to be strong. I  rushed her to the nearest hospital.

I walked into the hospital (private hospital). Hhmnnnn!! Nurses just dey size me. Starting from their unsmiling faces when I stepped in, to their hostile looks as they sized me up and down...in my mind i'm saying "madam what is it?? Are we sharing husband?? Fear God oo!!

Even my polite goodafternoon did not abate the tension in the room. It was almost as if I was infront of a panel for exam malpractise. Not to mention their rude replies when they were looking for our family card, as if you guys quarreled the previous night.

We finally got to see the doctor after she sluggishly called him. The doctor was the exact opposite, making light jokes here and there to put us at ease, even when the stitching process started, the nurse would grumble for every item she was asked to bring, and I was just looking at the elderly doctor wondering if he was aware of her attitude to work or he just completely ignored it.
I heaved a sigh of relief when she left the room.

I know if I throw this question openly like I did, a lot of people will have lots of bad stories to tell, so I want to hear directly from nurses.

Most Nigerians have sooo much complaints about nurses, rarely about doctors....mostly nurses!!

No disrespect please...are you guys underpaid?? Or you hate your jobs?? Please tell me. I am always baffled. I have had countless experiences with them, at the pharmacy, laboratory...name it!!
what really itches you?? whats the whole fudge?? Make us understand. Maybe we would be able to curb our excesses and you can then tolerate our flaws.

I get that Nigerians are one of the toughest people to tolerate, but it's your job for pete's sake. Maybe if you add a bit of passion or liveliness to it, there would be a turn around.

That being said, I urge you to "calmly" hit me with replies...looool

Nna nawa for these nurses ooh!!! All these kind of treatment to women in labour pains?? Plus torchlight gaan?!...Although I know some very nice and sweet nurses...*winks*...I still need to take some surveys...I'm guessing remuneration, but it still shouldn't affect their attitude to work! God helep us...we pray n look forward to better standards in our health sector!
